Riding in the Cab of the Amtrak Downeaster Train #685 |
| Description: |
Kevin and I got to ride in the cab, thanks to Conductor Marilyn Hunkins and Engineer Dewey, the same engineer that let us on the NPCU back on July 1st. Kevin held down the jump seat and I sat in the Assistant Engineer's seat for about 30 minutes from Saco to Portland. This was taken at 76 mph just south of Old Orchard Beach with a 79 mph speed limit at 8:28 P.M., 12 miles and 17 minutes from Portland. The train and crew was featured in an issue of Downeast The Magazine of Maine in June 2002. Yes, we did get to blow the horn. |

Dewey gives the train some dynamic brake as we come into Old Orchard Beach at 56 mph. Thanks a lot to the Downeaster Crews, a great bunch of employees! At the time Dewey had 46 days left before retirement after 38 years, he is now retired from Amtrak He also thinks Kevin's Aunt was a closet foamer, I think so too. |

It's been a good trip but now it's time to go home. Our Train sits behind the Portland Transportation Center at 12:29 P.M., we will depart at 1:55 P.M. Our train was actually about 2 hours late into Boston due to a Heat Restriction Issued by Guilford Rail because it was above 90 degrees. |
