Riding in the Cab of the Amtrak Downeaster Train #685 |
| Description: |
Kevin and I got to ride in the cab, thanks to Conductor Marilyn Hunkins and Engineer Dewey, the same engineer that let us on the NPCU back on July 1st. Kevin held down the jump seat and I sat in the Assistant Engineer's seat for about 30 minutes from Saco to Portland. This was taken at 76 mph just south of Old Orchard Beach with a 79 mph speed limit at 8:28 P.M., 12 miles and 17 minutes from Portland. The train and crew was featured in an issue of Downeast The Magazine of Maine in June 2002. Yes, we did get to blow the horn. |

Here we are, my first time in Pennsylvania at 6:44 A.M. looking at Train# 42 which will leave at 7:20 with our train at the right. AMTK 171 is one of the recent rebuilt units with no nose ldgo. We arrived here at 6:44, 2 hours and 44 minutes late of our 4:00 A.M. scheduled arrival. |

They had a freight led by UP 8789 and 3374 blocking Main Track 1 in the yard, so they had to bring the Eagle in on Main Track 2 to load and unload passengers at the Pedestrian Crossing. The Phase IV Amtrak 40th Anniversary Locomotive showed up in KC again tonight. The train arrived 10 minutes early and departed right on time. The on time performance here is quite a bit better than than on the California Zephyr route, which was recently came off a period of being annulled while Amtrak and BNSF tried to sort the mess out. AMTK 92 was the trailing unit. |
