Album Info:UP is helping Oklahoma celebrate their Centennial this year, honoring local heroes along the way. People from the military, railroad retirees, police officers and firefighters were invited to ride the train. There were many great stories along the way. We chased the train from Wichita-Perth, KS. We saw it in Wichita, Haysville, Riverdale, Wellington, and Perth. I'd like to extend a special thanks to my dad for driving while I took pictures and navigated, and UP and the UP Steam Crew for bringing it. I'd also like to thank anybody that I met along the way, I truly did meet some real American Heroes today!

Mo-Pac Retiree
Title:  Mo-Pac Retiree
Description:  I found out later that this old timer put in 45 years in engine Service with the MP/UP as a fireman then an engineer. He retired 21 years ago in 1986. He is in his late 80's and was glad to be aboard 844 today behind the fireman. I later found out that his name was Howard Dawson. One nice fellow indeed. Thanks to the Union Pacific Yahoo! Group member who told me his name.

Southbound UP 844 and the Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket
Title:  Southbound UP 844 and the Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket
Description:  The Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket operating as UP Train SWTEN 09 crests a small grade on the way from Wichita, KS to Enid, OK with a 14 car passenger consist in tow at about 30 mph. I don't think I could have asked for a better morning for big steam. This was the longest UP Passenger Train I'd ever seen, with 3 domes! Can't beat that!

Proud Heritage. Powerful Future.
Title:  Proud Heritage. Powerful Future.
Description:  The flagged baggage car "Council Bluffs" passes by. This is simply a locomotive flag graphic blown up to massive proportions. It sure flashes up the train from a distance. As if a yellow train needed a "flashing up".

Ready to Detrain
Title:  Ready to Detrain
Description:  Maybe a better term would have been "preparing to detrain". I highly doubt these folks were "ready". Here we see a group of passengers waving from the "Idaho's" Vestibule. Notice the man on the left is wearing an ICG-United States Bicentennial Cap.

UPP 814-Auxiliary Water Tender "Joe Jordan"
Title:  UPP 814-Auxiliary Water Tender "Joe Jordan"
Description:  UP has rebuilt their water tenders from their "Big Blow" look since the last time I saw one. They are now back down to the bare steam tenders they started with, and blend into the train much better. Compare this with a view of UPP 809 from last year: http://uptrain.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=386354 . 809 is currently getting the same treatment.

Classic Scene
Title:  Classic Scene
Description:  As passengers detrain on the other side of the train from the "Sunshine Special", a whole new load of riders wait behind me as Conductor Reed Jackson, Boilermaker-Welder Scott Turley, and a UP MOP recreate a classic scene straight out of railroading's past. Reed passed away on August 15, 2009, and he will be missed by the UP Steam Crew, and by a whole lot of other people who knew him.

Retired Mo-Pac Man
Title:  Retired Mo-Pac Man
Description:  This gentleman by the name of Howard Dawson had 45 years in with the MP/UP, and he retired in 1986, 21 years ago. He rode in the cab of 844 from Wichita to here, where he had just gotten off the engine. I stepped over and had a few words with him, along with other crew members. The Howard, in his late 80's said he'd had a ball this morning. Thanks to the Union Pacific Yahoo! Group member who told me his name.

Onlookers and 844
Title:  Onlookers and 844
Description:  844 sits surrounded by people at Wellington. The gentleman at the far left in the light blue shirt and shorts with a cap was a Korean War Veteran that I had the pleasure to meet. He had ridden a troop train at the start of his trip to Korea. My grandpa was involved in the conflict, and also rode a troop train, but got lucky and ended up in Germany, then England building runways for bombers.

One Last Look
Title:  One Last Look
Description:  We went down south of Wellington after the train departed for one last roll-by at Perth. This is where I spoke with the ex-ATSF engineman. He and his wife had forgotten about the train and heard it leave town, but they got here about 5 minutes before it rounded the curve.
