Steam Train Arriving for Servicing
Title:  Steam Train Arriving for Servicing
Description:  A friendly guy alerted us that he was on the way and before we knew it, the beautiful UP Train SMRNL 24 crept into the depot at 12:44 P.M., 1 hour and 44 minutes late of it's original scheduled arrival of 11:00 A.M. It was well worth the wait for everybody, this is one sharp looking locomotive. They also did their monthly test of the Tornado Sirens just before the train arrived, so maybe the 844 will be pulling into town the next time I hear them.

Departing
Title:  Departing
Description:  The steam train departed at exactly 1:00 P.M., just 16 minutes after arriving, but they departed 1 hour and 30 minutes late of their original scheduled departure of 11:30 A.M. The UPRR Special Agent walked along the tracks for a moment to keep any spectators from getting too close. I recorded a video of the train leaving after this photo.

Highballing Northbound
Title:  Highballing Northbound
Description:  We were sure that we hadn't caught the train, but we saw 2 crossings with railfans and their cameras pointed to the south, so we knew we had to have passed it while the tracks were away from the highway in the woods. So, we pulled off, set up, and the train was doing 69 mph when it hit the detector.

Northbound UP 844 and the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006
Title:  Northbound UP 844 and the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006
Description:  Here we see the train coming over the Ouachita River and Highway 7 just north of the town of Arkadelphia with UP 844 Pulling the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006 as UP Train SMRNL 24. Engineer Steve Lee had just cracked the throttle on UP's FEF-3 Class 4-8-4 Northern "Living Legend" and the smoke rolled with the whole train in view. They also let off some water on an open convertable on the highway. My friend, Alex recorded an awesome video of it (and later nearly taped over it) and my dad watched. The other two fans took stills like I did. With highs in the mid 90s today and lots of sun, this was a great day to chase big steam through the Natural State!

Fuel Stop
Title:  Fuel Stop
Description:  The train sat in Texas long enough this morning behind freights that it did not have enough fuel to make it on into Little Rock and had to take on some to get into town. We were in a horrible traffic jam and finally got back onto U.S. 270 and barely arrived in time to see it stopped at the depot.

Mo-Pac Retiree
Title:  Mo-Pac Retiree
Description:  I found out later that this old timer put in 45 years in engine Service with the MP/UP as a fireman then an engineer. He retired 21 years ago in 1986. He is in his late 80's and was glad to be aboard 844 today behind the fireman. I later found out that his name was Howard Dawson. One nice fellow indeed. Thanks to the Union Pacific Yahoo! Group member who told me his name.

I don't think I could have asked for a better morning for big steam. This was the longest UP Passenger Train I'd ever seen, with 3 domes! Can't beat that!

UPP 814-Auxiliary Water Tender "Joe Jordan"
Title:  UPP 814-Auxiliary Water Tender "Joe Jordan"
Description:  UP has rebuilt their water tenders from their "Big Blow" look since the last time I saw one. They are now back down to the bare steam tenders they started with, and blend into the train much better. Compare this with a view of UPP 809 from last year: http://uptrain.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=386354 . 809 is currently getting the same treatment.

Onlookers and 844
Title:  Onlookers and 844
Description:  844 sits surrounded by people at Wellington. The gentleman at the far left in the light blue shirt and shorts with a cap was a Korean War Veteran that I had the pleasure to meet. He had ridden a troop train at the start of his trip to Korea. My grandpa was involved in the conflict, and also rode a troop train, but got lucky and ended up in Germany, then England building runways for bombers.

Westbound UP 844 and the Railroad Days Limited Train
Title:  Westbound UP 844 and the Railroad Days Limited Train
Description:  The Railroad Days Limited comes off the Missouri River Bridge and arrives into UP's Hometown, and its destination, The Durham Western Heritage Museum, better known as Omaha Union Station, ending today's trip for UP Train SNPOM 19 from North Platte. Even though the train is moving railroad west, this is the eastbound leg of the trip. If you squint your eyes and remove a couple poles it could be 1945 again. This is probably my favorite picture today, sheerly because I finally got to shoot an Operating UP Steam Locomotive where it actually belongs, on home rails.

The old one seized up during yesterday's trip into Kansas City, and this new one was fabricated by a machine shop here in Kansas City today. UP 844 Says, "Diesel Locomotives Suck!"
Title:  UP 844 Says, "Diesel Locomotives Suck!"
Description:  December 1944 never looked so good. It's going to be hard to shoot diesels after this. Here UP 844 slumbers for the evening after a day on public display at Kansas City Union Station as part of The Valley Eagle Heritage Tour. Scott Turley of the UP Steam Crew was nice enough to turn on the headlight and classification lights for me to get a couple night shots. He's a hell of a worker and a nice guy.

Engineer Steve Lee
Title:  Engineer Steve Lee
Description:  Steve Lee has UP 844 and The Valley Eagle Heritage Tour well under control around 50 MPH on the UP Coffeyville Sub. near the Martin City, MO area. Seems like yesterday I was looking over this guy's shoulder in this cab when I was 7 years old. Hard to believe that was 13 years ago!

52 MPH
Title:  52 MPH
Description:  Now here I was thinking 52 MPH was pretty sweet--until Steve Lee mentioned to the pilot engineer that she hadn't even begun to stretch her legs. Hard to believe this thing went DOUBLE this at times in revenue service. That's the diesel MU box in the foreground.
