Retired UP 103 - GE B23-7 |
| Description: |
This old girl was retired 12-20-06. Built at MP 4603 in January 1978 with a GE Builders Number of 41775. It got its UP number, along with a coat of yellow and gray paint on 7-28-1986. This particular paint job dates back to 10-4-95. You can still see just a little bit of Mo-Pac Blue in the frame stripe under the radiators where the trust plate once was. It was sold off at an auction in North Little Rock, AR on 10-8-09, and is was waybilled to the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad, I'm not sure why it ended up in Kansas City, but it turned around and went back to North Little Rock. However, while my MNA Job was in the city, I was able to snap a shot of her sitting in Terry Spur at UP Neff Yard. Hard to believe I got to run this thing way back in 2002 when I was 12. This was the first UP Dash-7 that I'd seen in probably a good 3 years, which sucks. The Dash-7's are the only GE's I like, it was a shame to see them go when they did. |

Here's UP 107, the only B23-7 with an EMD Cab, applied by Mo-Pac after a wreck at Gorham, IL in May 1978 when the unit was only 5 months old. It was used as a local unit in Bluff back in 2002. Sadly, it was retired on April 26, 2005. It became a rebuild core, and was rebuilt into RP20GE Genset UPY 2678 in July 2007, which still rides around on this very frame and trucks. Here's the scene and how it happened. The three locomotives (SSW 9647, UP 177, and UP 2537) ran across a switch in the yard, where the switch frog joins the rail of the track, the old rotten tie fell through, it broke in half, the frog fell through the tie and the rail broke out of it, coming up and knocking the brake shoe connecting rod loose from the rear axle on the fireaman's side of SSW 9647, and the rear axle jumped on top of the rail head. The rear axle was was knocked back over into the gage as I arrived. These two men drove up with the area wheel truck were at work repairing the brake rigging as the truck in the background unloads a new section of rail, a frog, and a few ties. |
