Title:
Steam Train Arriving for Servicing
Description:
A friendly guy alerted us that he was on the way and before we knew it, the beautiful UP Train SMRNL 24 crept into the depot at 12:44 P.M., 1 hour and 44 minutes late of it's original scheduled arrival of 11:00 A.M. It was well worth the wait for everybody, this is one sharp looking locomotive. They also did their monthly test of the Tornado Sirens just before the train arrived, so maybe the 844 will be pulling into town the next time I hear them.

Departing
Description:
The steam train departed at exactly 1:00 P.M., just 16 minutes after arriving, but they departed 1 hour and 30 minutes late of their original scheduled departure of 11:30 A.M. The UPRR Special Agent walked along the tracks for a moment to keep any spectators from getting too close. I recorded a video of the train leaving after this photo.

Highballing Northbound
Description:
We were sure that we hadn't caught the train, but we saw 2 crossings with railfans and their cameras pointed to the south, so we knew we had to have passed it while the tracks were away from the highway in the woods. So, we pulled off, set up, and the train was doing 69 mph when it hit the detector.

Northbound UP 844 and the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006
Description:
Here we see the train coming over the Ouachita River and Highway 7 just north of the town of Arkadelphia with UP 844 Pulling the South Central Express Heritage Tour 2006 as UP Train SMRNL 24. Engineer Steve Lee had just cracked the throttle on UP's FEF-3 Class 4-8-4 Northern "Living Legend" and the smoke rolled with the whole train in view. They also let off some water on an open convertable on the highway. My friend, Alex recorded an awesome video of it (and later nearly taped over it) and my dad watched. The other two fans took stills like I did. With highs in the mid 90s today and lots of sun, this was a great day to chase big steam through the Natural State!

Fuel Stop
Description:
The train sat in Texas long enough this morning behind freights that it did not have enough fuel to make it on into Little Rock and had to take on some to get into town. We were in a horrible traffic jam and finally got back onto U.S. 270 and barely arrived in time to see it stopped at the depot.

Picking up Speed Over Grand Avenue
Description:
The special passes over Grand Avenue in Haysville as it picks up a little speed. The engine wasn't fazed a bit by 14 cars and level track.

Southbound UP 844 and the Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket
Description:
The Oklahoma Centennial Sooner Rocket operating as UP Train SWTEN 09 crests a small grade on the way from Wichita, KS to Enid, OK with a 14 car passenger consist in tow at about 30 mph. I don't think I could have asked for a better morning for big steam. This was the longest UP Passenger Train I'd ever seen, with 3 domes! Can't beat that!

One Last Look
Description:
We went down south of Wellington after the train departed for one last roll-by at Perth. This is where I spoke with the ex-ATSF engineman. He and his wife had forgotten about the train and heard it leave town, but they got here about 5 minutes before it rounded the curve.

UPP 5714 - "Lynn Nystrom"
Description:
The storage car "Golden State Limited" was renamed this past summer for the Late Lynn Nystrom, UP Steam Engineer who passed away in May 2010. Lynn was the fireman on my first steam cabride years ago and he continues to be missed by a lot of people.
