Dates:6/25/1994 - 8/12/2004
Album Info:I decided to go a different route and in addition to new photos, post some of the ones that I have scanned. Some of these include: The first pictures I took of trains when I was 6 years old in 1996, right up through 2004 with Unpatched UP Predecessor Units and trains around Southest Missouri and any trips I took. From 1996-2000 I used my grandma's Kodak 110 Film Camera, in 2000 I switched to 35mm throwaways, then in June 2001 my first camera was bought for me by my dad, a Kodak Advantix, which I used until August 2004 when I switched to digital, still with Kodak. The only exception to this album is a print scan from 2005 when I didn't have my digital camera.

UP Local Train Switching - Last MP Locomotive - My First Train Picture
Title:  UP Local Train Switching - Last MP Locomotive - My First Train Picture
Description:  This was the first train I ever remember seeing, and obviously one of my earliest childhood memories. It was also the last Missouri Pacific Diesel Locomotive in Jenks Blue Paint rostered by Union Pacific. My dad and I had just finished riding the engine for an hour that Saturday while they were switching with UP Train LSV03 25, building pickups and setouts for trains headed north and south, so in addition to that it was also my first "train ride". 2103 is an EMD GP38-2, and was built in 5-1973 as MP 952 with a builder and frame number of 71702-30. 1974 brought a system-wide renumbering plan to the railroad, and it quickly migrated to the 2100 class by that September. This unit was repainted and became UP 2103 on 8-2-1994 only 38 days after I rode the locomotive and 11 years and 8 months after th UP-MP-WP Merger in 1982. This unit was part of a 37 unit group, MP 2074-2110 that were on a 15 year lease to MP, assumed by UP at merger. They were returned to their owner/lessor upon expiration beginning in 12 1993, sold by owner/lessor to Helm Financial and held on UP property. 17 were leased to CSX as HATX units, 2 to Montana Western, 2 to Alton & Southern, and 16 units were leased by again by UP in May 1994. On 3-13-2003, the it became UP 362 in UP's newest renumbering plan at the time, and was assigned primarily to California and later Texas. It was returned to Helm Leasing and became HLCX 1842 on 5-16-2014. It now wears their maroon paint scheme with white stripes, had dynamic brakes added and has PTC installed, and again out west operating out of the Roseville, CA area. I last saw this engine outside of Kansas City near Bucyrus, KS as it moved to North Little Rock, AR for light overhaul on 6-23-09, coincidentally just a couple days shy of being this photo's 15th anniversary. It was also reassigned to San Antonio, TX after that. The engineer on that day in '94 was Larry Plumb, who passed away on October 26, 2016. Larry hired out on 1-1-1967, on the Mo-Pac, and retired in June of 2008 from UP. She's looking a little tired by this date, but still kicked hard and loaded fast, as Larry later recounted to me. The Buzzsaw on the cab is almost gone, the 1973 factory paint is faded, but the horn on the roof is still what looks to be a Leslie RS-3L/Prime PM-920 hybrid. The bells on the first few GP38-2's were slung under the frame, but later units had them mounted on the side of the hood. The can style MU receptacle on the front handrails were a Western Pacific thing that got applied to most UP and MP engines after the merger. The road number was crudely painted on the air brake compartment doors in the late 80's as the one on the hood weathered away. The unit behind it is one of the GP38-2's acquired by the MP from the Rock Island Estate after the shut down in 1980, it already wears UP colors. My dad held the camera, I aimed and pushed the shutter button on that Kodak 110, being just 4 years old at the time. Click. “Well, I guess you're a railfan now." I'd say so.

Southbound UP Manifest Train - My First Day Railfanning
Title:  Southbound UP Manifest Train - My First Day Railfanning
Description:  This was taken way back when I was 6 years old. This was the second train picture I ever shot. Back before the SP Merger, UP used to run trains southbound on the Hoxie Sub. to North Little Rock like in the Mo-Pac Days. Poplar Bluff was the crew change point before they moved it to Dexter in 1998 with the start of directional running over the former SP's Cotton Belt. The engineer is just about to deboard and head off to the motel. We had just chased the train over from Ash Hill, back when the track speed was 40, it wasn't hard to beat trains into town, now it is 70, and it is quite difficult at times. This was taken with the Kodak 110 Camera that belonged to my Late Grandma Anna Pumphery, or as I knew her, "Mamaw".

Tied Down Northbound UP Manifest Train
Title:  Tied Down Northbound UP Manifest Train
Description:  Back when I was a 10 year old kid, I talked my grandma into letting me use the camera, and my dad into taking me to see this train that sat on the siding for about 4 or 5 days. The last unit in the consist was an SP SD7. The sad part is, I didn't really take roster shot of the Dash-9, even though they were going fast at this point.

Northbound UP Manifest Train With CNW 6930 and SSW 9652
Title:  Northbound UP Manifest Train With CNW 6930 and SSW 9652
Description:  A lashup made up of Operation Lifesaver CNW 6930 SD40-2 and SSW 9652 GP60 move UP Train MNLPR 23 through the Bluff. CNW 6930 was wrecked a year later and scrapped, sadly. Cotton Belt 9652 lives and soldiers on unpatched. The 6930 would be one of the 5 CNW's I would photograph in revenue service. The sad part is that it rolled over and was destroyed in a UP derailment at Des Plaines, Illinois on 10-21-02 and was later cut up for scrap at Proviso, IL during December 2002. I guess it would rather meet the torch rather than a UP Patch. Thanks to IKE for photo restoration help.

UP Local Assigned Locomotives
Title:  UP Local Assigned Locomotives
Description:  Here's UP 107, the only B23-7 with an EMD Cab, applied by Mo-Pac after a wreck at Gorham, IL in May 1978 when the unit was only 5 months old. It was used as a local unit in Bluff back in 2002. Sadly, it was retired on April 26, 2005. It became a rebuild core, and was rebuilt into RP20GE Genset UPY 2678 in July 2007, which still rides around on this very frame and trucks. See a picture of it here: http://www.trainweb.org/gensets/railpower/upy/2678.html .

Northbound Manifest
Title:  Northbound Manifest
Description:  My grandma and I chased this train from Poplar Bluff to Ash Hill. The engineer blew the horn about 14 times and the crew both waved, it was pretty bizzare.

Southbound UP Manifest Train
Title:  Southbound UP Manifest Train
Description:  This had a lashup of power that would be hard to be duplicated today, especially the SP. The MASNL 17 comes down the Hoxie Sub. on a fine November morning. I actually rode my Go-Kart to Ash Hill to see a train, this was what I saw. I was 12 at the time.

Northbound Manifest With CNW 8706 C44-9W Leading
Title:  Northbound Manifest With CNW 8706 C44-9W Leading
Description:  Even back when I didn't have to drive 8 hours to see a CNW, it was still nice to see them roll through occasionally. This was one of the last 10 operating CNW C44-9W's on the UP System and one of the last 14 at the time. Almost everything on this one was original, even the numberboards! Now, on 9-17-06, there are just 2 active CNW's, and both Dash-9's, CNW 8646 and 8701.
